MATCH DRAWN

PITCH DENIES REAL TEST
The pitch lacked a little something for the Boxing Day Test in Wellington, the crowd were treated to both sides grinding out runs at a meagre rate, leaving a draw the only safe bet.

Admittedly it gave Nathan Astle (141) and Craig McMillan (142) the opportunity to add 222 for the fifth wicket. But with needless wickets falling, the Kiwis never took a real hold of the game.

In reply Gavin Rennie missed out on his maiden Test hundred after nicking one behind from part-timer Craig McMillan. For New Zealand, Chris Martin had five good wickets, opening the depleted attack with Shayne O'Connor.

Time was too short for th Kiwis to get far enough ahead second time around, 290 in front with barely a session remaining, as the game drifted on. Andy flower passed 1000 runs for the calendar year, cememtning his position near the top of the world rankings. But the real winner had been a sublime pitch, leaving the match a couple of days short of proving a real Test.
