Zimbabwe v India 1st Test, Bulawayo, June 7-10 2001 INDIA WON BY EIGHT WICKETS INDIA IN CONTROL India were always in the ascendancy in this game, but for a bright Flower brothers partnership on the third afternoon. But even that was not enough to set a testing total for India on the fourth and final day. India finished the first day just 90 adrift with seven wickets in hand, after the seamers made early inroads into the vulnerable Zimbabwe top order. They stood 97 for five, with only the 'modern atlas' Andy Flower, standing tall in the face of the opposition. But on day two, Zimbabwe had the tourists 178 for six, as seamer Andy Blignaut forced Sachin Tendulkar into giving a catch to Stuart Carlisle. But keeper Dighe and Harbhajan Singh made life difficult for Zimbabwe, adding 74 for the eighth wicket, to force a sizeable first innings lead. Zimababwe were toppling at 86 for four, still 59 in arrears, before Flower G. joined Flower A. to put on 101 and give them a slim lifeline. But 303 for seven overnight, Grant Flower ran himself out, after adding just four more runs to his overnight 67, that all but sealed the home side's fate. With all the time in the world to score 184, Shiv Sunder Das and Laxman took them within sight, before Tendulkar (36 not out off 49 balls) joined Das to end Zimabawe's agony. Richard Kendall |
